Creating Metaverse Safe Spaces

The metaverse is rapidly expanding. Virtual worlds powered by VR headsets, augmented reality, and web3 technologies are emerging everywhere. Some blend the physical and digital, while others operate as fully decentralized economies. As this evolution continues, the boundary between real life and the online metaverse is becoming increasingly blurred.

For any metaverse project to thrive long-term, it must prioritize safety, privacy, and user well-being—especially for children under 16. When users feel protected, they stay. When they don’t, they leave.

The LEGO Group and Epic Games recently partnered to create a family-friendly metaverse designed to be immersive, creative, and safe for kids of all ages. However, challenges around privacy and safety still remain. Online spaces have always dealt with harassment, trolls, and bots. In VR, these issues are magnified. Avatars can invade personal space, follow users, or behave aggressively. Companies need to clearly define what constitutes harassment in 3D environments, set firm behavioral standards, establish consequences, and handle complaints quickly and effectively. Anticipating potential issues before they emerge gives companies a crucial advantage.

Children, in particular, require the strongest protections. They love exploring digital worlds, and as the metaverse grows, safeguarding their privacy and mental health becomes non-negotiable. Laws like the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and the Children and Media Research Agenda Act may soon extend into virtual environments. VR systems and devices must be designed with built-in protections and strict limits on data collection.

Transparency is equally important. If AI-driven avatars are going to interact alongside humans, users must be able to tell who—or what—they’re engaging with. Clear labeling helps maintain trust and prevents deception.

Biometric data adds complexity. Metaverse devices track personal physical and behavioral patterns, and many U.S. states have enacted laws to regulate this. Illinois’ Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA) is among the strictest, requiring written policies, consent, and defined deletion timelines. Texas and Washington have broader laws, while California, Colorado, and Virginia follow rules under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) to limit data collection to what’s necessary.

Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) sets a global standard for privacy laws. Companies’ self-regulation should focus on limited tracking and giving users control. Building trust encourages users to share responsibly.

Consent cannot be a one-time event; it must be updated regularly. Users should be able to access, correct, or delete their data. Laws like CCPA and the Colorado Privacy Act require compliance from the start.

Lastly, safety breaches remain a risk in the metaverse. Hackers can target wallets, avatars, and virtual property. Encryption, secure logins, and breach response plans are essential.

As the metaverse expands, adults demand control and children need protection. Founders who prioritize safety and privacy from day one will create enduring virtual worlds. Those who don’t may see their projects turn into ghost towns.
